Some Goings on and Mysteries…

Doug Ford… Ontario’s new Premiere:(

Well, the results are in… and Ontario is stuck with a Progressive Conservative majority government and now we have to deal with that blowhard bully PC leader Doug Ford for at least the next four years:(  Seriously, the Liberal Party was so despised/hated that the PC’s could have run a monkey as their leader and still won.  They didn’t even have a political platform… all the dude had to do was smile and not hit anyone on camera.  What this means is that our kids will get their sex education programming in the school playground, based on what Johnny saw on the internet the night before.   I don’t think Doug Ford is as bad as Donald Trump, but I certainly hope his lies and Twitter feeds are at least as ridiculous as the President of the United States… it’s quite entertaining!  Let’s not forget that Doug’s crack smoking brother, and former Mayor of Toronto, Rob Ford actually made it onto national TV when he went on Jimmy Kimmel twice!  What really bugs me is that the despised Liberal government received 1 million votes and won only 7 seats in the legislature… and the PC’s received 2 million votes and won 73 seats!  There is something terribly wrong with our “democratic” system.

…. But this is not a politics blog, so we’ll move on…

In other news my beloved Las Vegas Golden Knights (whom I’ve been following as a loyal fan since their inception) lost the Stanley Cup finals in only five games to the Washington Capitals.  For those of you who don’t know me, I’m not a big fan of hockey… and certainly not the National Hockey League.  How great would it have been to have the Golden Knights win the coveted trophy in their first year of existence?!!!  This would really be a slight to Toronto Maple Leaf fans which are the worst fans in the world… and I’m a Buffalo Bills fan!  Why Leafs fans still support such a terrible team for decades and yet still pay hundreds… if not thousands to secure tickets to a game is just insane and stupid!

My second favorite sport to watch is basketball, but I must say that I’m glad that the National Basketball Association’s season is over.  What a disappointment it was… the Golden State Warriors won yet again… like anyone didn’t see that happening again!  The last four years has seen the same two teams in the NBA finals and thus I don’t even know why any team even bothers to play anymore?!  The only interesting games in this years play-offs was between Golden State and Houston… at least the Rockets gave those miserable Warriors a run for their money!

… But this isn’t a sports blog either so we’ll move on…

No Nintendo news today unfortunately so we’ll jump to everybody’s second favorite part of this blog…

SEGA Corner: I was thinking the other day about something that has confused me for the past two decades.  When I was a teenager, I was really really good at Thunder Force 2 & 3 games on the Sega Genesis.  While part 3 wasn’t nearly as hard as part 2 for the simple reason that you only lost the weapon you were currently using when you got blown out of the air by the Orn Empire… where as you lost every weapon in part 2 when the same thing happened.  Never-the-less I could handily beat both games… part 3 with one ship!  All this talent and yet I could still not get a single actual date with any girl I was attracted to in high school! I always landed in the dreaded “friend zone”.  And yet I was super good looking and was a runner up for both the Backstreet Boys and N’SYNC!

Look at this sexy stud!  The girls at my school must have all been crazy to pass me up!  Did I mention I could complete Thunder Force 3 with one ship?!  This is surely one of the world’s biggest mysteries.

Things are looking up though… I’m hoping the next blog will have me acquiring two rare NES game titles!

Until next time,

Barrie Game Exchange

Yesterday my wife and I went to the Barrie Game Exchange which is about an hour north of Toronto.  Perhaps I should clarify.  I went to the Barrie Game Exchange while my wife waited in the car (like most wives, she isn’t into games).  In fact, the only women I saw at the show was the significant other of the vendor.  I don’t recall seeing any women buyers, which is odd since the floor was literally covered with nothing but handsome and athletic studs!

Now it has been a while since i’ve found games, and i knew that i wasn’t going to get a steal from the vendors at this show.  I did however manage to score a few deals.  I use the word “deals” lightly as I paid nearly book value for a few items.

IMG_6028 The first score of the day was Balloon Fight and a copy of Baten Kaitos… the later which I know nothing about, but the price was right and is a game that I’ll give a go to.  Balloon fight is a game that I’ve been looking for, but for what ever reason (probably price) haven’t picked up yet.  I offered the guy $40 for the pair and he agreed.  Now he did mention that Baten Kaitos was missing the bonus materials disc, but this is not important to me and I appreciate his honesty:)

The next purchase was for a copy of The Legend of Zelda: The Windwaker.  I’ve been holding out on this game since the HD re-release on the Wii U looks mint, but again the price was right at $30.  I didn’t even bother haggling with the guy.  Again I know nothing about this game other than that it somehow fits into the Zelda franchise which is something I stopped trying to keep straight for a while now.  With all the splitting timelines, and games being released out of order makes it too confusing.  Fortunately I have yet to meet a Legend of Zelda game that I didn’t really enjoy so this was a good purchase.  The guy actually tracked me down at the event as the game was locked away in a cabinet (his wife had the key).

I can’t put my finger on it, but the next seller kind of rubbed me the wrong way.  It wasn’t anything he and his wife IMG_6027said or did, but I came away feeling like a bit of a sucker???!!  The  games I bought from this guy were The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (which is an amazing game!).  This copy came with the Zelda music CD which I’m looking forward to listening to.  I hope it has a mix of the dungeon music from the original game as I can’t get that piece out of my head.  So for $75 I purchased this title along with Prince of Persia and Spy Hunter for the NES

IMG_6026The final sale of the day was yet another Zelda title… this one being one that I already own, but not on my 3D hand held system.  I’ve had the Ocarina of Time on my N64 for quite a while now and although the game has had stellar reviews, I just don’t really like the system that much.  In fact of all my Nintendo consoles, I would put the N64 as my least favourite.  I had picked it up at Value Village for next to nothing years ago, so no big loss.  This version I will play as I just love my 3DS XL.  I beat the Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and loved it.  It shares a lot of similarities with A Link to the Past both in game play and content, but that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing as both are extremely good games.  A Link Between Worlds obviously has better graphics, and the 3D element added a lot of fun.  This is why I didn’t mind shelling out $60 for the Ocarina of Time and a copy of Maniac Mansion for the NES.IMG_6023

Oh, and I also picked up a copy of Turok: Evolution, and Time Splitters 2 for the game cube at a garage sale the other day for $3.50 each.  Both are complete and are in excellent shape.  I’m not really that excited about these games as I’m not really into FPS, but I didn’t already own them and they were too cheap to pass up.

I went to a shop in a flea market just north of the city that has the most outrageous (almost insulting) prices yet.  He wanted $89 + tax for a copy of Act Raiser on the SNES!  The game normally goes for around $20.  I can understand a bit of a markup at a store, but this is insane!  At first I thought I heard him wrong (I HATE having to ask the price), but then he also had a crummy bass fishing game for the SNES for a whopping $43 + tax.  I hate to say it, but for this price I would happily sell off my collection and retire down in the Caribbean.  It’s too bad though because this guy had a lot of games that I needed.  At these prices however, I will not be coming back to his shop!

Sega Corner:  I’m on the lookout for another Phantasy Star cartage for the Sega Master System as the Sega Dude apparently has a made himself a copy of the game that has extended dialogue which isn’t too much for kids like the original release was.  Also the game has the FM sound put on it so that will be nice to hear.  Not that the original release was bad… Phantasy Star was perhaps the best game on the system or even of the time… I’m just saying it will be an added treat and will give me a reason to play the game again.   Anyways if I can find another copy of the game, he’ll transfer over the improvements.

See you next time:)

Gone For A While… Recent Pick Ups… and some Venting!

IIMG_5039‘ve not posted in quite a while… like almost 7 weeks now, but this is only because I haven’t had any pick ups really worth mentioning.  However all that changed last weekend when I managed to score a copy of Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, Final Fantasy II for the SNES.  I love RPG’s so I’m REALLY looking forward to playing these games… especially Secret of Mana which I think I will play first.  To be honest, I’ve never even seen this game and only bought it because one of my buddies raves about this game as being his favourite on the SNES.  As to whether or not it is any good, only time will tell.

IMG_5041I also managed to score a copy of Dragon Warrior IV for the NES… this completes my Dragon Warrior collection on the original Nintendo, though there are many other chapters released on other consoles such as the PS2, Nintendo DS, etc.  These other titles may be good but I’ve never played any of them.  Dragon Warrior was a great little RPG from back in the day.  For the price, the original is definitely worth a play through.. should be able to find it for less than $7US.  My only complaint about this title was that there wasn’t a large variety of monsters to fight, but what irked me more so was that you only had one hero in your party.  I suppose this had it’s benefits as you could focus all your efforts on building up the one character…. but it also made the game a bit lonely:(  Alas in Dragon Warrior II they started to allow you to acquire a party of adventurers.  I’m not sure what is different about Dragon Warrior IV as I’ve never played it, but considering how much I enjoyed the first one in the early 90’s I don’t think it will disappoint.

Okay so lets start talking cost.  These are all premium titles and they didn’t come cheap, but I think I came out alright considering these were all purchased from a store and a reseller.  For Secret of Evermore and Final Fantasy II, which as you can see from the photo carried a $100 price tag for the pair I actually spent no cash.  I did however trade an N64 with memory expansion, and extra controller, an SNES controller, Super MarioIMG_5043 World for the SNES, and Super Smash Bros: Brawl.  Now I probably could have fetched a better price if I sold this lot on Kijiji, but I’m really getting tired of these types of sites (Craigslist is also included in this mix).  The games are over priced, and no matter how well/low you price your games everyone wants a better deal.  So you know what… forget it… this lot had been sitting around in my basement for a while now, and the Ice Man offered me $100 in trade for it.  I feel good about it because I know I will actually play these games… unlike many of the NES titles that I’ve picked up in the past purely for the sake of collecting them.  Dragon Warrior IV however is a title I can’t wait to play… well at least after Secret of Mana:)  These latter two tittles however I had to shell out some cash for.  I traded in a couple of PS2 games (Gungrave, and another title I can’t remember but was nothing special), three of those multi game joysticks that you hook directly up to the TV… (these are crap in my opinion, but Fred wanted them).  I also traded two GBA carts (Mario Vs. Donkey Kong… this is actually a great game but I have two copies of it, and Super Mario Advance 3… again a double.  So in addition to the aforementioned trades, I offered him $100 to which Fred agreed.  It’s a lot of money I know, but for these two titles I think I did rather well…plus I haven’t had any pick ups in quite a while so even my wife wasn’t too mad;)

Now for my venting.  If you’ve followed my blog (and lets face it most of you haven’t:(… you’ll know I’m a fan of the youtube show The Game Chasers.  They now have 43 “episodes” and yes I’ve watched them all.  When I think about how much time that is…. approximately 21 minutes per show times 43… that’s, well, that’s just over 15 hours of my life that I have spent watching them.  I’ve come to several conclusions… heck after 15 hours of viewing something you had better have something to show for it.

What I’ve concluded is this.  Billy and Jay seem alright… but the way they treat their sidekicks really bugs me… especially that 8-Bit Eric.  They treat him like a second class citizen; as though he should feel lucky to be graced with their presence and allowed to be on their stupid show.  I have something to say to him… “8 Bit Eric, if you are reading this, don’t put up with any more of Billy and Jay’s crap… you muscle your way in there and get the games before they do and feel good about it.  They’ve had their moment in the sun… their 15 minutes of fame, well now my friend it is your turn. You really come off as a bit of a wuss sometimes, but 8-Bit Eric, I know you have it within you to be something more than the Game Chasers make you out to be.  Don’t be a chump, be a champion.  Grab what’s yours dude… like AlphaOmegaSin does!”

Anyways… the Game Chasers came up to Toronto Canada (they are from Texas) and they were told to go to this game store that I have been in a few times called A&C Games.  Now please let me inform you that unless you have a “showmqdefault” you won’t be getting any good deals here.  When I was first getting into collecting I was picking up Atari 2600 carts as these definitely have the best art work on the covers… unfortunately the games are so awful that they belong in a land fill… in fact that brings me to my point (like I ever have one) … for the longest time there was an urban myth about the game E.T. for the Atari 2600.  They produced this game so quickly so as to coincide with the release of the movie, that it was a complete marketing and programming disaster…. in fact it has been named the WORST video game every made. several thousand copies ended up in a landfill in New Mexico.  Well as it turns out the myth was true… they were in fact buried in a dump, and somehow ended up collectively fetching $37,000 on Ebay (there were approximately 700,000 copies buried there).  Anyways… wow was that ever long winded… the guys at A&C games wanted to charge me $15 for the title for apparently the “Worst game ever” has some value.  Thankfully I didn’t fall for their trick and managed to pick up a copy of E.T. for $1 at another store… even at that price I think I over paid!

So theseancgamesfinal Game Chasers come into A&C Games and they let them rummage through all their unsorted items in which they find several goodies…. Panic Restaurant, Mighty Final Fight, Battletoads/Double Dragon, and several other desirable collector games.  The price for all the games… $300CAN… for goodness sake, Panic Restaurant alone goes for more than that!  It really burns me that these dudes from Texas come up here with their stupid show and get great deals from the highest priced video game store in Toronto.  Can you say Jealous/Envious… Yeah I guess:(.

SEGA CORNER:  This part of the blog seems to be a fan favourite… well actually only the Sega Dude likes it but that is enough validation for me:)  Speaking of the Sega Dude, he recently gave me a few more games for nothing but a thank you note that I still have to write… Thanks dude!  Maybe a section of my basement should be called The Sega Dude Corner… after all many of the games came from him?!:)  While Phantasy Star III absolutely sucks, it’s great to have it in my collection.  All I need now is part II… my favourite chapter.  There is a game swap coming up on March 29th in Waterloo.  We have ordered a table, but this time I want to do more trading.  The Sega Dude and I are going with high hopes.IMG_5044IMG_5045
