N64 Pick ups… really?!

I’ve recently had a bit of luck at Value Village and with Kijiji, but nothing that will blow your socks off.

I picked up these games for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii for $4 each.  They aren’t really that big a deal other than I love Mickey Mouse, and though this isn’t the best game, it isn’t the worst either.  Pilotwings Resort I purchased because I want to use my 3DS more.  I think that it is a fantastic little handheld system… I have the XL unit… no big deal;)  I look forward to playing both of these titles, and if they are complete garbage then I can always trade them later.

Another pick up from Value Village.  Nothing spectacular other than I don’t have it.  Honestly though I’ve never really been into driving/racing games… if I want to drive a car I’ll just go out and do that in real life!  Some of my friends are really into these types of games… especially one on the PS4, but I couldn’t care less.  This game was complete and in great shape though so I figured what the heck, and spent the $4 they wanted for it.  It isn’t worth very much at all… maybe $8??… but I’ll probably trade it anyway.

 

 

Now onto the Kijiji hunt.  I’m still astounded by how much people want for their retro games on Kijiji/craigslist/Ebay.  Every now and then however you stumble across a deal which I suppose is what keeps me coming back regularly.  Seeing the same ads though over and over again drives me crazy… if it isn’t selling, then your price is too high dude!

So I came across this one guys ad for a bunch of NES games.  I had them all except for Adventure Island 2 and offered the guy $20 for the game (he wanted $25).  I think this is a fair price for this title and apparently he did too as he accepted my offer.  It’s not the rarest game out there, but it is made by Hudson Soft and is a pretty good platformer.  It also completed my Adventure Island trilogy on the NES.  I’m not sure why (other than it must have been a licensing issue) they didn’t just call this series Wonderboy as this is exactly the type of games they are?!  In fact, on the first title, the only thing different is the sprite of the character you play… everything else is spot on Wonderboy.

Again on Kijiji I came across an ad a guy had for a bunch of Nintendo 64 games.  Now I know that I’ve poo pooed the N64 several times in the past but these are actually decent games (a rare thing on the N64 as most games on this system are total crap).  Plus it nearly completes my Mario party collection… I’m missing part 9 on the Wii, and 10 on the Wii U.  However unless I find these two games at a yard sale I doubt I will ever own them.  Come to think of it… I’m missing the disc to Part 6 as well… I purchased a mint case and manuel from a Salvation Army last year for $4.  JJgames.com actually has a “disc only copy”, but they want too much for it; like $59US!!  The game is okay, but not that good:(  To me it is worth $15 – $20 for the disc, and even that is pushing it

I’ve been thinking for a while now though about selling/trading my N64 and games.  I just never play it (partly because the system stinks) and there isn’t really that many good games out for it.  That being said there is “only” 311 games to collect for the N64 and none of them command the hundreds (or in some cases thousands) of dollars that some NES titles go for… and many are sports titles; there are nine wrestling titles alone!  So maybe it’s worth hanging onto the “good” games for now.  I mean after all if I am going to ever complete my NES collection, then I’m going to need some major trade bait.  No one seems to be giving away Panic Restaurant or Little Sampson for a song:(  And this is too bad as I write some pretty awesome music… unfortunately very little of it is appropriate for this site:(  I miss recording music with my cousin!

But the real find of the day was a VHS copy of Transformers the Movie!  See I needed a $10 bill to make exact change for the deal I made on Kijiji and only had $20 bills.  So I went into Value Village on my way to meet this guy, and this was the only thing that I wanted in the entire store.  I love G1 Transformers and have a fairly substantial collection, including every episode on DVD and a complete Fortress Maximus, but for some reason I didn’t own a VHS copy of the movie… at least not with this cover art.  Anyways it was $1 so I’m not that worried about it.  Then again that dollar could have gone towards one of these coveted titles below:(

It’s Mine!

Frist things first.  I FOUND IT!… and at Value Village of all places.  I went in there yesterday afternoon, and there it was starring at me right in the face… Super Smash Bros. Melee for the Nintendo Game Cube!  And all for the low price of $10.  I couldn’t believe my luck.  I haven’t forgotten how I was sniped by a guy for the same game about eighteen months ago… I think i even wrote about it here… but all that is moot now as at last the game is MINE!  The box is in great shape, however upon inspection, it is missing the manual, and the disc has seen better days but at least it works well.  Also in this threesome are Mario Strikers Charged, and Mario Party 8 for the Wii.  These were also $10 each and I’m going to keep the former and trade the latter game.

 

These games were picked up at a yard sale which my wife and I do almost every Saturday morning.  All three of these games were picked up for $8,and  although Pikmin and Animal Crossing are missing their respective manuals I still think it was a good deal.  The discs are free of scratches and the boxes are in great shape.

Now onto the non-Nintendo finds.  I picked up these Sony Play Station 2 games at the same aforementioned yard sale.  I think I paid $10 for all six of these games.  I was kind of bummed that the Grand Theft Auto Trilogy was missing the Vice City disc, however that is a very common game and I should be able to find a replacement with very little trouble.  I don’t collect for PS2, but if I see some good titles for cheap I’ll get them to trade.  I’ve never heard of “The Warriors” before but I hear that it will trade well.  Too bad Dark Alliance is the Greatest Hits version:(

This was also a Value Village find.  It’s mostly complete (missing the Rachet and Clank game) but the box is in great shape as is the system.  It cost me $22 and I’m hoping to get at least $60 in trade??  I might hang on to it for a while though and see if I can find a copy of Mega Man to play.  From what I remember it the robot master battles were much more difficult than the original NES version.  Plus there was two additional bosses…. Oil Man, and I can’t remember the other?

Finally, these two candy dispensers were given to me by my mother-in-law.  She knows I love Nintendo and is always on the look out for me at the local thrift shops and yard sales. It is VERY much appreciated!

Sega Corner:  No updates this week… mainly because it is so hard to find the stuff other than at a reseller’s store, and even then the pickings are often slim.  I’m always keeping an eye out!

Ottawa

My wife and I went to Ottawa to visit a good friend of ours over the spring break.  Along the way we thought we would stop off at the local thrift stores and a small chain (5 locations) called Chumleighs so I could do some retro video game shopping!

These were all pick ups from the Chumleighs at the Belleville location.  Of everything here, the one I’m most excited about is the official NES Cleaning Kit.  It isn’t that it’s worth a lot, but more that I haven’t seen one (let alone in the box) in a very long time.  At $12 the price seemed about right too so I nabbed it.  The four Super Nintendo games I bought are ones that I’ve been looking for for a while, however every time I see them they are in some over priced game store where I have had to take a pass.  Both Ultima games look like fun, and if Lemmings 2 is half as fun as the first chapter then it will be a worth while purchase.  Galaxy 5000 was just at a good price and I didn’t have it yet so I picked it up.

 I already have these games and thus I bought them to trade at the Waterloo game swap which happened last weekend. I will give an update in my next blog of what I ended up trading them for (I still have to take the pictures… also I’m still waiting for the Sega Dude to email me a picture

I got really happy when I found a copy of Mario Party 6 for $4.00 at a Salvation Army thrift shop in Ottawa, however I was disappointed to discover that the game inside wasn’t as advertised.  I bought it anyway as I’ll never get a case and manual for that cheap.  Now I just need to find someone (perhaps jjgames.com) who will sell me just the disc.  I always wondered who in their right mind would ever order “just the disc”, but now I know… ME.

At the same Salvation army they were auctioning off an NES console with 12 games.  While there were a few titles I didn’t have, tucked away at the back of the lot was a mint copy of the elusive Action 52 with manual!  The highest bid was only $120, but seeing as how I don’t live in Ottawa I couldn’t really place my own bid unless I put my friends information down instead of mine.  I bid anyway at $250… cheap for an Action 52 cart.  I probably (actually definitely) should have bid higher but the thing is I didn’t really want it for my collection.  I’m going for a complete NES officially licensed collection and the Action 52 does not fit this part of the criteria.  It would have however been a very valuable trading piece.  It’s all moot however as I don’t think I won it. The auction was yesterday and my friend in Ottawa would have called me by now… or maybe he is just being a dink about it and bid on the game for himself!  Oh well, it was fun to think about for a while.

Sega Corner:  No updates from the Ottawa trip aside from that I will be going back to Belleville at some point with the Sega Dude to visit Chumleighs again.  They had quite a few Genesis games for sale.  The thing about Chumleighs is that while they are a gaming store, their prices are usually what I would call fair… meaning that they are at or slightly below that of pricecharting.com or one of my several gaming price guide apps that I have on my phone.

All the other stores in Ottawa like Microplay were inconsistently overpriced… meaning that they were asking for either WAY too much money, or just a bit too much money that I took a pass.  In fact there was one store in Quebec that we went to that was in the middle of nowhere that had the BEST selection of games that I’ve ever seen.  However you guessed it… asking too much money.  For example they wanted $250 for a copy of Snow Bros. on the NES.  I suppose I could have tried haggling a bit, but you know how that goes when the person you are bargaining with is some underpaid teenager who just couldn’t give a hoot, and we are just lucky that they showed up for work.
